The new residential social and health centre in Lesmo (MI) was completed and activated at the end of 2004.  It is open to young and adult deafblind people in the region.  At present there are 14 users in the centre and once it is working to full capacity it will have the possibility of accommodating 52 full-time guests.

There are also six other branches in Italy which work closely with Osimo. They are in Milan, Modena, Osimo, Rome, Naples and Ruvo di Puglia (Ba). Social and educational services are offered in these areas to deafblind people and their families. Local branches offer social and educational services in the following ways:

• support for users (the deafblind and their families)
• consultation on local services available
• selection, co-ordination and training of local volunteers
• information and awareness raising

Osimo - a "golden thread" between the deafblind and those who are significant in their lives.
This is the main centre and the place where it all started. Since 1967 the Association has carried out its main activities of diagnosis, education and rehabilitation here.

Milan - the first of our branches
The branch was opened in 1987 and as well as carrying out the activities already listed, concentrates on the problems relating to work placement of deafblind people. A community home was opened in 1996 for adults who became deafblind later in life and therefore have a good level of autonomy. As well as a supervisor, others working there include four care assistants, a social worker, night workers, conscientious objectors and some volunteers. The community contains a creative/free expression workshop where guests can do manual work, work on the computer or writing in Braille and also oganises social and recreational activities.

for some years and runs various cultural activities. Other leisure activities take place on site or outside with the help of volunteers.

The need to expand services for the deafblind and multisensory impaired at a national level is becoming more and more pressing.  There is a particular need for greater opportunities for those in the young/adult age range who do not always have their needs adequately met.

With this in mind, the Association has taken on various projects:

-          in Modena the first stage has already been completed in setting up a residential social rehabilitation centre for young and adult users in the Emilia Romagna region.

-          in Molfetta (BA) a new social-health centre will be opened for adults and young people in Puglia.

At the moment, discussions are also under way with the Regional authorities in Campania and Sicily to evaluate the possibility of offering further services in these regions.

At a national level the "Lega" is a watchdog for the needs of deafblind and multisensory impaired people. It develops various initiatives in the fields of awareness-raising, service provision and collaboration with other institutes and associations through its main centre in Osimo and its other centres.

At an international level, the Lega del Filo d'Oro collaborates with many other institutes and associations operating in the same field and benefits from the exchange of information and experiences and the scientific updating. The Association is now part of Deafblind International (an international organisation for those who work with and for the deafblind) and represents Italy in the European Deafblind Network.
