Special celebrations this Christmas
Christmas was a special time made up of meetings with and warm good wishes to our deafblind guests, their families and all those close to our Association. This year was even more important because it was time to celebrate together the 40th birthday of the Lega del Filo d’Oro.
One unexpected surprise was that Renzo Arbore came. He didn’t want to miss out on this special occasion and came to watch the Nativity play put on by our Allegra Brigata (Happy Brigade) theatre company. He then did a ‘jam’ session with some of our deafblind guests. All this was followed by games, dancing and other entertainment.
There were Christmas parties for our deafblind guests, their families and volunteers organised before the Christmas festivities, not only in Osimo, but also in the local offices: 16th December in Molfetta, 17th December in Rome, 19th December in Lesmo and 21st December in Naples.

A special 40-year stamp

Launched in Rome at the ‘Romafil’, philatelic congress, the celebration stamp for the Lega del Filo d’Oro was put in circulation by the Italian Post Office last October 9th. The picture on the stamp shows hands touching each other during the process of communicating using the Malossi alphabet, one of the communication systems used by those who do not hear and see.
The Philatelic Office of Rome and the Philatelic Circle in Osimo, on the day of issue, used the special date stamp of the Philately Division. On the 20 December 2004, the actual date of the Lega del Filo d’Oro’s 40th birthday, another special date stamp from the Philatelic Circle in Osimo was used.

‘I, myself’
This was the title chosen for the 4th National Deafblind Conference held in the new residential social-health centre in
Lesmo from 2nd to 6th October. Self-determination and independence were the themes selected by the Deafblind Committee for the Conference. The need to be able to play an active role as far as possible in their own lives and in making choices about daily living and about the necessary support were the topics highlighted. Many speakers talked about the role of the family, of social services, legislation, the attitudes of the deafblind and the conditions of elderly deafblind people.
Anyone interested in receiving the Conference Proceedings in print or in Braille, should send a request to: info@legadelfilodoro.it

The Lions honour our sponsor Renzo Arbore
The Lions Club have honoured our sponsor and supporter Renzo Arbore with the ‘Melvin
Jones Fellowship’. This is an award made in the name of the founder of the Lions Club, to recognise humanitarian generosity. The handing-over ceremony involving Lions Clubs from Osimo, Ancona-Colle Guasco, Ancona-Host, Fabriano and Jesi, was held on 7th June in the Palazzo Campana in Osimo. This prestigious award was given to Arbore for the commitment, affection and solidarity he has shown towards our Association. To recall some of the important manifestations of this collaboration, some TV advertisements for our Association were shown, starting from as far back as 1989.

Culture Project 2000
“Expression without limits” was the name of the Culture Programme 2000 whose objective was to share artistic and cultural experiences from different European countries. It was a golden opportunity to work in co-operation with others and develop your own creativity and ways of expressing yourself through music, painting and sculpture. The Lega del Filo d’Oro collaborated with two other deafblind associations (one Scottish and one Greek) to organise the project.
The first meeting was held from 23rd to 30th May at the Santa Cristiana hotel in Marcelli di Numana (An). There were 30 participants, including deafblind artistes, from five different countries (among them were 2 young people with their own families and a teacher from our Association). The objective of the first meeting was to put together a theatrical show for performance on the 30th September at the Theatre Royal in Scotland.

Honorary degree for the Secretary General
Our Secretary General, Rossano Bartoli, was given an honorary degree in ‘Economy and Management’ from the Polytechnic University of the Marche for ‘ the work he has done for thirty years for the Lega del Filo d’Oro and for his contribution to the existence and development of the Institute’.
This prestigious award was made at a formal ceremony on the 11th May in Ancona.
Our Association can celebrate 40 years of success and achievement thanks to its widespread national network of supporters, but also without doubt, thanks to the many people who work inside it with professionalism and passion. Among them is Rossano Bartoli.

My place in the world
Independence, access and participation for the deafblind
After the great success and support achieved in Padova, Modena and Lesmo, the appointment with our roadshow was in Ancona at the Mole Vanvitelliana from 18th to 30th January 2005. A catalogue of aids has been prepared for the occasion which will be available in the four sections of the exhibition and which can be directly downloaded online.
‘My place in the world’ is an interactive roadshow designed by the Lega del Filo d’Oro on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. It’s a show created to allow visitors to get to know some aspects of the world of deafblindness better and to ‘touch it with their own hands’.
There are specific information areas in ‘My place in the world’ (video, display panels, information points) and four ‘environments’ which reproduce contexts and at the same time tell stories about the daily lives of deafblind people (home, school/rehabilitation, work, free time). The individual and his daily needs are the targets for the whole project whose objectives are on the one hand to give a clear indication of the specific rights of the deafblind and multi-sensory impaired like autonomy, participation and access, and on the other, to offer a practical evaluation of the tools – aids and technology – which can offer a better quality of life to the deafblind. In 2004 and 2005, the Lega del Filo d’Oro aims to take ‘My place in the world’ to the 6 regions in Italy where it currently has local centres and to some places which are important for the work of the Association.
We look forward to seeing you!

On 9th March, in the presence of various dignitaries, family members, friends and supporters, the first part of the "Come Te" social-rehabilitation centre was opened in Modena. The building contains 24 full-time in-patient places and some day-care facilities and will mainly be for the use of adults and children in the Emilia Romagna region. The Lega del Filo d’Oro will be responsible for the completion of the social-rehabilitation centre and its future management which until now has been in the hands of the "Come te" Association. Very shortly the first local services for the deafblind in Emilia Romagna will be activated.
