The main causes of deafblindness and multisensory impairment
can be summed up as viral infections contracted in the first three months of pregnancy (e.g. German measles), premature
birth or complications at delivery, meningitis or other rare genetic diseases like Usher's Syndrome, which starts
with deafness at birth and progresses to gradual loss of sight,
or Charge Syndrome.
A clear diagnosis of the disabled person's residual senses
is therefore essential for choosing the most appropriate rehabilitation treatment. The specialist team in the Diagnostic Centre - medical specialists, social workers, psychologists
and caregivers - carries out a multi and interdisciplinary
in-depth analysis. At the end of the evaluation (which usually
takes a week) a tailor-made personal education and rehabilitation programme is drawn up on the basis of age
and needs. The programme is then followed in the Rehabilitation
Centre or in other local centres. For children under 3 there
is also an early intervention programmme to activate
learning capacities as soon as possible.
