It is fundamental to work towards the re-integration of deafblind people into the society and environment the come from within the limits allowed by their specific disability. The support and active participation of the family is indispensable for achieving this objective. Family support encourages gradual progress and gives the child a base from which he can manage to cope with his education outside of the Rehabiliation Centre. The Lega del Filo d'Oro offers concrete support to families of deafblind people, offering help and guidance. For more than 15 years it has pursued a policy of involving and training the parents of the multisensory impaired. Parent training is carried out by two psychologists working together with individual families or with groups of parents. The presence of an accompanying relative, which is always beneficial, is particularly important during intensive treatments (which last for some weeks) in the Rehabilitation Centre, and for evaluation and early treatment (children under 3) at the Diagnostic Centre. Hostel accommodation has been set up to allow families to stay near their children at some points and to take part in the activities. A Committee of family members has also been set up to take an active part in the organisation. It functions by making suggestions and offering consultation of general problems affecting families of the multisensory impaired both within the Association's environment and at a national level.
